"Egg Salon"
October 19 - November 8, 2024

Art & Lit Gallery's newest exhibit, "Egg Salon," is so unique and wonderful! We're very lucky this local artist decided create this special show for the gallery!

Karen Messerman is a Berkeley-based photographer whose subjects include nature and landscape, urbanscape, travel and portraiture, in addition to a more concept-based body of work in which she incorporates a variety of digital and printmaking tools.

Karen investigates the world with her camera, making notes, seeking interesting patterns and striking visual contrasts. She is drawn to both natural and urban landscapes as both offer unique expressions of visual beauty and give rise to compelling questions about our lives and our place in an ever-evolving world.

In “Egg Salon” at The Art & Lit Gallery, Karen uses a series of egg images and sculptural forms to create a layered and multi-dimensional tableau. The egg is a simple, yet sublimely elegant form and offers up a vast trove of meanings and associations. In “Egg Salon,” her goal was to create a visually playful, intriguing and meditative space for the viewer.

Karen began her photographic studies while pursuing a B.A. in Anthropology at the University of Michigan and later received her MFA in Photography from the Visual Studies Workshop in Rochester, New York. She taught photography for many years at the ASUC Art Studio at UC Berkeley.
